Post-Transplant Hair Care: What to Expect After Your Procedure
The most critical phase of a hair transplant actually starts once the operation itself has finished. How carefully you look after your scalp during this recovery window has a direct impact on the final result, so precision matters at every step.
On the day after surgery, the donor area and the transplanted zone are kept covered with a dressing. On the first working day the dressing is taken off, both regions are gently cleaned, blood circulation is checked, and you are sent home. The following day the same routine is repeated for the transplanted area and the donor sites are washed. Our team explains exactly how your hair should be washed, and once you have learned the technique you continue washing this way for 15 days, by the end of which all the crusts will have been cleared away.
After that point patients can return to their normal routines and wash with ordinary soap or shampoo as they did before. Shedding usually begins around day 10 and may continue for roughly 1.5 months on average. This happens because the channels opened during the procedure put stress on the follicles during recovery. The roots remain safely beneath the skin, so there is no real danger or problem — this shedding is entirely expected, and it is normal for some or even all of the transplanted hair to fall at this stage.
The growth phase of the transplanted hair generally starts once shedding ends, around 100 days after the operation. Even then, do not expect a sudden burst of growth, because hair follows a set growth cycle and each strand completes that cycle at its own pace. Some hair finishes within 3 months, while other strands may only complete the cycle at 5 months or even after a year. Overall, the full picture and length of all the hair is typically reached in about 1 to 1.5 years.
When the channels are created correctly, at proper angles and with careful placement, the result will look completely natural, and serious health issues or shock shedding will not occur outside of unusual circumstances such as accidents.
